How to Choose the Right Solar Panel Size for Your Home

Choosing the wrong system size is the most common mistake we see. Some households install a system that is too small and end up buying power during peak periods, while others over-size and see a large portion of their generation exported to the grid for very little return.

Start with your usage data

Pull twelve months of electricity bills or download your half-hourly consumption data. Look for three numbers: your daily average usage, your peak usage periods and your seasonal pattern. A typical Australian household uses between 10 and 20 kilowatt hours per day.

Factor in your roof and shading

A north-facing roof with minimal shading can produce roughly 20 to 25% more energy per installed watt than an east or west facing roof. Shading from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings can cut output dramatically, which is why we run a shade analysis before we commit to a system size.

A correctly sized system pays for itself faster, because every kilowatt hour you generate is offset against your own usage instead of being exported at a lower rate.
