Solar Panel Warranties Explained: What to Look For

A solar warranty is one of the most important parts of your purchase decision, yet it is often the least understood. Here is what the different warranties cover and what to look out for.

Product warranty

Product warranties cover manufacturing defects in the panels themselves and typically run for 25 years. Tier one panels commonly offer 25 year product warranties with 25 to 30 year performance guarantees.

Performance warranty

This is the guarantee that the panel will still produce at least 85 to 87 percent of its rated output after 25 years. It is the number that determines how your system will perform in the second half of its life.

Workmanship and inverter warranties

The workmanship warranty covers the installation, while inverters usually carry their own warranty of 5 to 12 years. Ask what happens if the inverter fails after year five and whether labour is covered.

A long warranty is only valuable if the company behind it will still be trading in five years. Choose an installer that has been established and has a strong local presence.

Questions to ask

Ask who handles warranty claims, whether the warranty is transferable if you sell the property, and whether removing and reinstalling a faulty panel is covered. We are happy to walk you through the fine print on any quote you receive.
