Roof being prepared for solar panel installation

Preparing Your Roof for a Solar Installation

A little preparation on your part can make the installation day faster, safer and cheaper. Here is our pre-installation checklist.

Clear the workspace

Move cars out of the driveway, keep pets inside and clear the path to the switchboard and meter. Installers need clear access to the roof, the main switchboard and sometimes the meter box.

Check the roof condition

Roof panels usually last 25 to 30 years, so it makes sense to repair any broken tiles, rusted flashing or lifted ridge caps before the array goes on. Your installer will check this on the day, but flagging issues early avoids delays.

Know your switchboard

Most modern switchboards can handle a solar installation without modification. Older boards with ceramic fuses or limited spare breaker space may need an upgrade, which is far easier to arrange before installation day.

You do not need to be home for the full installation, but somebody should be available to approve the final switchboard changes.

Ask your installer for a written plan

Before the crew arrives you should have a clear plan showing panel positions, the cable run and where the inverter will be mounted. If you are unsure, our team will walk you through it.
